About
The University of Peradeniya (UoP), one of Sri Lanka’s oldest and most prestigious higher education institutions, was originally established as the Ceylon University College in 1942. It later became the University of Ceylon and, following its relocation to the scenic floodplain of Peradeniya, was renamed the University of Peradeniya. The University is celebrated for its academic excellence, vibrant research culture, and breathtaking campus nestled between the Mahaweli River and the Hantana mountain range.
Comprising nine academic faculties, UoP offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Arts, Science, Medicine, Engineering, Agriculture, Dental Sciences, Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, Management, and Allied Health Sciences. In addition, the University conducts postgraduate education and advanced research through four postgraduate institutes — the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture, the Postgraduate Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, and the Postgraduate Institute of Science.
The University serves more than 24,000 students, supported by nearly 900 academic and 3,000 non-academic staff. Its learner-centered and inquiry-based approach ensures that education and research remain closely aligned with national priorities and global needs.
